Do you remember what you learnt about local government in the last lesson?
Local government is the smallest form of the three types of government. The federal government oversees the entire country, and the state government oversees an entire state. Meanwhile, the local governments oversee the smaller areas that make up a state, like cities, towns and your neighbourhood.

What is the Local Government?
Local Government looks after specific areas within each state. Each local government area varies in size and population. These organisations, known as Councils, look after services such as in local government, an independent group of people called Councillors work with and for their local community to make decisions on how the local area is managed and how resources are used. The community votes for the councillors to represent them at elections, which are held every three to four years. These councillors represent the community across wards or areas. Every year, one councillor is voted by the others to become Mayor. The Mayor is the spokesperson for Council and they help the Councillors make fair and good decisions.
